House of Lorraine
The house of Lorraine is a family which reigned on:
- the Duchy of Lorraine (of 1048 to 1453 and 1484 to 1736)
- the Duchy of Bar (of 1484 to 1736)
- the Tuscan (of 1737 to 1860)
- the Austria - Hungary - Bohemia (of 1780 to 1918)
- the Duchy of Modena (of 1814 to 1859)
- the Duchy of Parma (of 1738 to 1748 and 1814 to 1847)
- the Mexico (of 1864 to 1867).
Its genealogy goes back to the count Gerard Ier of Lorraine, so known under the name of Gerard of Alsace († 1070), duke of Lorraine. The duke François III of Lorraine married in 1736 Marie-Therese de Habsbourg, heiress of this house, giving rise to those which one called the Habsbourg-Lorraine. The house of Lorraine was melted in the prestigious house of Habsbourg, heiress of the dukes of Burgundy. In 1737, François III had to give up his rights on the Lorraine and the Barrois but accepted in exchange the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. It however preserved the title of " duke of Lorraine and Bar" for itself and its heirs. He was elected emperor of the Romans in 1745.
The current elder one of the house of Habsbourg-Lorraine is the duke of Hohenberg (born in 1929). Nevertheless its branch, although elder, is regarded as morganatic from the Austrian point of view , and " titrates it; duke of Lorraine" is carried by the archduke Otto of Habsbourg-Lorraine (born in 1912), oldest son of the last emperor of Austria, Charles I {{er}} which in addition and by fidelity with its ancestors is made name " duke of Bar".
