House of Denmark

The building

At the 19th century, with the site of the House of Denmark, an amusement park was, the Jardin Beaujon, known especially for its fireworks and flights in the montgolfier.

At the beginning of the 20th century, with the site of the current House of Denmark, was built a private mansion of four floors - the Hôtel Subiran - consisted of a principal house giving on the Fields-Élysées, a large interior court and two houses giving on the Rue Lord Byron. The idea to create a Danish house abroad is born at the time of the World Fair from Brussels in 1935. The architect Tyge Hvass takes part in this exposure with his Danish houses.

The Danish State acquires the ground in 1948, demolishes the Subiran hotel on the initiative of Johannes Kjærbøl, Danish Minister for Housing and makes build the House of Denmark with an aim of promoting Danish industry, agriculture and the culture. The first stone is posed on September 23rd, 1952 by Erik Eriksen, Danish Prime Minister, in the presence of Robert Schumann, French Minister for the Foreign affairs and the brass band of the guard of Tivoli. Part of the funds for the construction of the new House is collected at the time of a Franco-Danish exposure to Copenhagen in 1950, like by a lottery of the Danish colony in France. The total costs of the House total 6,7 million Danish crowns.

April 23rd, 1955: Inauguration of the House of Denmark in the presence of King Frederik IX and of the Queen Ingrid, Danish the Prime Minister H.C. Hansen, of the President of the French Republic Rene Coty, of the President of the Council Edgar Faure, the future large dressmaker Erik Mortensen and of the sculptor Robert Jacobsen.

In 1999, decision is made to renovate the House and to modify the frontage. The House will include/understand the Copenhagen restaurant, the restaurant/shop Flora Danica, a versatile room, a showroom Bang & Olufsen as well as offices and an apartment. The architects of the project are Susanne Kongsted and Søren Eriksen. Begun in February 2001, work finishes in December of the same year. In February 2002 takes place the inauguration of the " nouvelle" House of Denmark in the presence of Its Majesty the Queen of Denmark & Her Royal Highness Prince Consort of Denmark, Mr. Mayor of Paris Bertrand Delanoë, and of Mr. Minister for Education Jack Lang.

Operation

Emanation of the Kingdom of Denmark and foundation of the State, the House of Denmark autonomous and is managed by a board of directors consisted the Ambassador Hans Henrik Bruun (President), Marianne Slot, Directrice, Søren Berg, Managing director, and by Ulrik Federspiel, Ambassadeur, General secretary of the Danish Ministry of the Foreign affairs.

Mission and activities

The goal of the House of Denmark east to promote the Denmark in the cultural and economic fields towards the French and the many foreigners who, each day, pass in front of the House of Denmark on the Fields-Élysées.
