House of Courtenay

The house of Courtenay is resulting from Hutton, related with the counts de Sens, who, benefitted from the war of succession of Burgundy between Robert II the Piles and Otte-Guillaume of Burgundy to seize a ground on which it builds the castle of Courtenay.

This house had two branches:

  • the elder branch, preserved the ground of Courtenay, but died out about 1150, by the death of Renaud de Courtenay. His/her son-in-law Pierre de France inherited the seigniory and was the stem of the Maison capétienne of Courtenay
  • the branch junior, is established in the East and managed the Comté of Édesse. She died out in 1200
