House of Coligny
See also: Coligny
Line of high ranking, the house of Coligny is one of oldest of the French Noblesse.
Exit of the kings and sovereign counts of Burgundy, it held sovereignty on one of the steps of the franque Burgundy: the Revermont, whose Coligny (Ain) was the chief town. This house belonged to rare the Princes de Bourgogne ( principles regni Burgundiæ ).
It became " française" in XVe century, by the possession of the seigniory of Châtillon-on-Loing inherited by the marriage (1432) Guillaume de Coligny with Catherine de Saligny.
Currently, all the European royal families, as well as the greatest part of the high aristocracy, go down (by female way) from the house of Coligny. Indeed, these royal families have all, among their ancestors, William of Orange, known as the Silent one, and his wife Louise de Coligny (girl of Gaspard II admiral de France).
Origin
There are two assumptions concerning the origin of the house of Coligny:
-
first assumption: the lords de Coligny being known as of Xe century, they are attached to famous Manassès Burgundian of which they would be a branch. It is the assumption suggested as of XVIIsiècle by the Jean historian Of Bouchet, author of the History of the famous house of Coligny (1662). This assumption, purely genealogical, is based on a small number of acts, moreover dubious.
-
second assumption: the house of Coligny draws its origin from the Counts de Bourgogne. Revermont, indeed, was part of the Royaume of Burgundy; it was held in all sovereignty, with all the rights of justice (of which the spring and the call, constitutive of real sovereignty). This second assumption, formulated by Roch de Coligny at the end of the XXe century, is based on the analysis of several thousands of medieval acts concerning Revermont, the Bresse and generally Burgundy. It comes from a not genealogical, but especially territorial and historical approach. It has a very great probability.

Reunification with the house of Pile of Chenecey de Coligny
The back-small-girl of Gaspard III of Coligny married (1747) Thomas de Pillot lord of Chenecey, chief of the Maison of Pile. It became Count de Coligny and Marquis de Coligny. It is that, like his wife, Thomas descended from the very first Princes de Coligny. By this marriage, the two parts of Coligny (Coligny-the-Old man and Coligny-le-Neuf) were again joined together in the hand of a noble family which could pride itself to go down from the former lords de Coligny. The loop was buckled. From now on, the grounds, weapons, titles and other goods of the antique house of Coligny are held by the house of Pile of Coligny.
