House of Castries

The house of the Cross of Castries , in Latin of Cruce , is a family of the nobility of the Languedoc.

History

Its blazon carries “of azure, with the gold cross” . To note the particular pronunciation of this old family name, devoted by the use: Castries is said “Castrates”.

The family tradition wants that it counts among its members Saint Roch, the apostle pilgrim who at the 13th century devoted his life to the service of the patients and the pestiferous ones.

The family of the Cross of Castries is however officially anoblie only at the end of the 15th century by functions of dress. She was allowed with the Honneurs of the Court in 1744, 1753, 1776, 1786.

Duke of Castries

The title of duke of Castries was conferred by patent in 1784, with promise of reversion of the title of Duc of Guines, in Armand Charles Augustin of the Cross of Castries. Under the Restoration, it was created on June 4th 1817 duke of Castries and Pair of France.
  1. 1784 - 1842: Armand Charles Augustin of the Cross (1756 - 1842), 1st duke of Castries.

  2. 1842 - 1866: Edmond Eugene Philippe Hercules of the Cross (1787 - 1866), 2nd duke of Castries, wire of the precedent.
  3. 1866 - 1886: Edmond Charles Auguste of the Cross (1838 - 1886), 3rd duke of Castries, nephew of the precedent.

The ducal title, fallen in déshérence following death without descent from the third duke in 1886, was raised, like titrates courtesy in 1907 by Rene Edmond Marie Gabriel of the Cross of Castries (1842 - 1913), count de Castries, old diplomatic, pertaining to a branch junior by the family.

Notable members of the family

The house of Castries counted a Marshal of France, Minister for the navy, several general lieutenants and brigadiers, knights of the orders of the king, and gentlemen of the room.
