House capétienne of Courtenay

The house capétienne of Courtenay is a branch of the dynasty capétienne, resulting from Pierre de France (v. 1126-1180/83), sixth wire of the king of the Francs Louis VI (1081-1137), lord of Courtenay by his marriage with the heiress of the Maison of Courtenay.

It is a famous house, originating in the castle of Courtenay in Gâtinais (Loiret) which goes back to the 10th century. It was combined at the royal house of France in 1150 by the marriage of Pierre de France, with Elisabeth de Courtenay.

The elder branch acquired by marriage the marquisat Namur and the Latin empire of Constantinople. But, obliged to fight to preserve (to no purpose besides) this empire, its members sold their Western possessions. It was for this reason that the branches juniors were very little provided and sank in the lapse of memory as a capétiens.

This house was distinguished in the crusades: she counted two counts of Édesse, Josselin Ier de Courtenay (1131), and her son, Josselin II (1149), and several emperors of Constantinople: Pierre II of Courtenay (1216), already count d' Auxerre and of Nevers, which died before to have been able to take possession of its new crown; Robert Ier (1219), second wire of the precedent, which was driven out of Constantinople by its subjects in 1228; and Baudouin II of Courtenay, brother of Robert, under whom Constantinople was taken again by the Greeks (1261). Baudoin died in Italy in 1273. The grand-daughter of this prince, Catherine de Courtenay, married in 1300 Charles de Valois, wire of Philippe Bold the, which made pass to the house of France the fields of Courtenay.

As for the branches juniors, they multiplied ad infinitum; one of them gave rise to the English family of the counts of Devon: she has as a chief Jean de Courtenay, lord of Chevillon, which is established in England in 1644.

In France, the last male of the last branch junior died in 1733 and the branch died out the June 29th 1768 with the death of Helene de Courtenay (1689-1768), with the result that the connects resulting from the dukes of Bourbon remained the only branch remaining of the dynasty capétienne, from where name “house of Bourbon”, which is since then one of two official names of the dynasty (as well as “house of France”).

Helene de Courtenay had married Louis-Benign of Bauffremont (1684-1755), marquis de Bauffremont, whose direct descendant are current the Jacques de Bauffremont-Courtenay, duke of Bauffremont (born in 1922), president of the Institut of the house of Bourbon and chair Mémorial of France Saint-Denys.
