Houffalize

Houffalize (in Walloon Oufalijhe ) is a French-speaking city of Belgium located in Walloon region in the Province of Luxembourg.

With the 1st July 2004, the total population of this commune is of 4.651 inhabitants (2 338 men and 2.313 women). The total surface area is of 167,40 km ² what gives a Population density of 27,78 inhabitants per km ².

History

The origin of the name of Houffalize is Atla Falisia (High Falise or High Rock), and dates from the 12th century. The evolution of the name during time is the following: Hufalize, Hufalizia, Hufalise, Houfalize, Houffalise, Houffalize.

During the Second world war, the town of Houffalize was in the middle of the Bataille of the Ardennes and was touched hard, as well by the engagements as by the allied bombardments.

Panzerkampfwagen V Ausf G " Panther" registered 111 of the 116ème Panzerdivision is the quiet witness of the martyr of the city. He is located Place King Albert.

Geography

The city is located in the middle of the Ardenne, in the basin of the Eastern Ourthe.
