Houdan

Houdan is a common department of the Yvelines, in the area Île-de-France, in France, located at approximately 25 km in the south-west of Mantes-the-Pretty. It is the Chef-lieu canton of the same name.

Geography

The commune is bordering on Gressey in North, Maulette and Richebourg in the East, and confines at the department of Eure-et-Loir in the west. The borough is at the top of a hill located at the confluence of the Vesgre (affluent of the Eure) in north and Opton its affluent in the south.

The commune is served by RN 12 recently put at twice two ways and by a station of the railway line Paris-Granville via Plaisir.

History

Writing formerly Hosdench , the name of Houdan would come from the root saxonne hod , borough.

County under the Old Mode, Houdan belonged to the family of the lords of Montfort since the 10th century, then was attached to the Duché of Brittany by marriage. The city was thereafter disputed by the English and entered the royal field following the marriage of Louis XII and Anne of Brittany. It was yielded by Louis XIV to the family of Luynes in exchange of grounds close to the park of Versailles and remained the property of Luynes until the Révolution.

Economy

The breeding Ovin was very developed at the 19th century.

The fame of the city was done thanks to the breeding of the Poule of Houdan.
This hen is recognizable with its black plumage paved of white, with enormous crested like with its five fingers by patte.
The breeding knew its apogee before 1914 but the famous hens disappeared almost after the Second world war. A club protecting this race and that from Field beans “Houdan Faverolles Club of France” was given on feet in 1979 by Daniel Cordier: these races are today saved, and profit from a red Label.
In 1978, Daniel Cordier re-established within the Saint-Mathieu fair an avicolous national competition; this fair is oldest of France. It recreated there a championship of France of this race as well as that of Field beans.

In Houdan, the factory of Boldoflorine was, a herb tea intended for the hepatic treatment. In addition to this herb tea, distilling produced the “Guignolet houdanais” and of the Cidre. The building, which was unused since the end of the 20th century, at summer victim of a fire in March 2004. It has had for summer transformed into privative residences.

Houdan is a small city in which the majority of people work outside (mainly in Plaisir, Versailles, Paris…) and which thus saw especially the weekend.

Culture

Architectural heritage

  • Saint-Jacob Church and Saint-Christophe: Gothic church of style built with the XV {{E}} and 16th centuries, chorus of style Rebirth. On the lintel of the western gate one can read: “ French people reconoît the Supreme existence Être and of the Immortality of the Heart ” which recalls that in 1790 this church was devoted “temple of the Reason and Être Supreme”. Inside, the Orgue realized by the factor Louis-Alexandre Clicquot in 1739 was restored in 1972 by the company Boisseau.
  • Keep  : remain old fortifications, it was built at the beginning of the 12th century by Amaury III of Montfort; it is a massive tower isolated in the west from the borough, 25 Mètre S top and 16 meters in diameter, flanked of four turrets 4,8 m in diameter. It is currently used like Tower water.
