Hotel of Rochechouart

Private mansion Parisian, located at the 110, Street of Grenelle, with Paris in the VII {{E}} district, the Hotel of Rochechouart , built in 1776, shelters the Minister of education Main road.

History

In 1776, the Marchioness of Courteille acquires a piece of ground Rue of Grenelle, in the district of the " Pre-with-Clercs" (future Suburb Saint-Germain), in order to make there build a hotel for his/her daughter Madeleine Melanie, wife of the Viscount Aimery-Louis-Roger de Rochechouart. Construction is entrusted to Mathurin Cherpitel, architect of the King. A passage paved and planted trees led to the main courtyard. On both sides of the access two curved houses rose containing, one the stable, the other the kitchens.

In 1804, whereas her husband, Appointed of the Constituent , is deceased at the time of the French revolution, the viscountess de Rochechouart sells the hotel with the Maréchal Charles François Augereau, duke of Castiglione and Pair of France.

In 1829, the widow of this last yields the hotel to the Ministère of the State education, which has just been created to replace the imperial Université. Since this date, the hotel of Rochechouart is the seat of the ministry in load of education. The Hotel will accommodate some famous hosts. In 1878, Guy of Maupassant is named attached to the cabinet of the Minister for the State education, the worships and the fine arts where it is in charge of the correspondence of the minister. Then Jules Ferry, Minister for the State education and the fine arts of 1879 with 1883, lance its great reform of teaching, with the exemption from payment of primary school education (1881), the Secularity and the obligation up to thirteen years of primary school education (March 28th 1882), and the creation of female secondary education (1880). It is with the Hotel of Rochechouart that republican school was born the .

The frontages on court and garden (of a surface of 1.300 m ²), the Large gilded living room (currently the office of the minister), and the small office were classified Historic buildings in 1937, just as the old main building of the 18th century in 2002.
