Comments
There is no doubt, the cinema of Marcel Carné is pessimistic. The characters seem blocked, tetanized by a very often hereditary lack of confidence which sometimes makes them wrongly show a company indifferent in their connection. Their worst enemies are only themselves.
Pierre and Renee are in failure, their personal approaches negative of the life are in contradiction with the variegated fauna which joyeusement celebrates a communion in the hotel where they penetrate to finish some. Their vision of the future is dismaying, without spring. So young people and already if turned sour…
The final solution not having functioned, Pierre loosely flees by leaving wounded Renee.
Mr Edmond, former gangster with the doubtful past, feels attracted by this youth blocked on the ground which changes it continual moanings of his/her partner, Raymonde, prostitute with the high verb which while being subjected clamp its right to independence. Sought by former companions of plunders, it maintains with Renee a relation which metamorphose it and makes of him for a time a frequentable character.
The new “family” of Renee, following her distress, surrounds it by affection. The owner of the hotel is paternalist without preconceived ideas, it treats Renee like his daughter, his wife loving and protective supplements a tenderizing table which takes name of “family”.
The starting drama, avoided accuracy by the bad luck of a bad shot, reveals a poignant solidarity between the beings of which some benefit without complexes from opportunities to seize: the truck-driver does not hesitate with cocufier the lockkeeper more or less practically agreeing under his glance. In spite of this small skid, the cordial climate of the unit contrasts with the depressing starting remarks of Pierre and Renee on the company.
This popular small world, evolving/moving at the edge of the Saint Martin's day channel in a crammed hotel, gives its noble letters in the very often pejorative term, “promiscuity”.
The legendary counterpart of Henri Jeanson pronounced in to and from by Raymonde and Edmond “My life is not an existence, if you believe that my existence is a life” returns out of mirror their unconscious and voluntary refusal to take off their greyness.
The defeatism is continuously maintained: the final scene where Edmond faces his old band is significant renouncement of a private man of energy.
On the other hand, the rage of living is maintained by Raymonde which rebounds and carries on its road.
Pierre and Renee will be entitled to one second chance.

It is in this film that Arletty pronounces celebrates it “Atmosphere? Atmosphere? Do I have a mouth of atmosphere? ” , counterpart which is one of most famous French cinema. However, like points out it Jacques Lourcelles, this counterpart less emphasizes the force of the dialogs of film than genius of Arletty which, starting from a counterpart which could have been rather heavy, succeeded in creating an unforgettable feature become the symbol of the Parisian gouaille.
- Except for some plans, the film was turned to the Studios of Billancourt where the hotel of North and the Canal Saint Martin's day were entirely reconstituted by Alexandre Trauner. The uneven one of the lock is absent from decoration. Paradoxically, the hotel of North (where the film was thus not turned) was classified historic building in 1989 thanks to film, to protect it from a project of demolition.
