Hosea Kutako

Hosea Kutako (1870 - 1970) was a chief of the Ethnie herero of the South-western African (current Namibia).

Biography

Hosea Kutako was born in 1870 in Okahurimehi close to current Kalkfeld.

It takes part in 1904 in the war of Hereros against the colonizing German and the troops of Lothar von Trotha. The August 6th 1904, it demolishes the patrol of Lieutenant von Bodenhausen, then later is made prisoner with Omaruru, from which it manages to escape.

From 1907, once returned peace, Kutako becomes teaching Rhenish Mission then minor with Tsumeb.

In 1917, he becomes the chief of Ovaherero, named by the South-African administration after the defeat of the German colonial troops.

In 1920, Frederick Maharero, the oldest son of the chief Samuel Maharero, named Hosea Kutako as chief by interim of Ovaherero.

The August 26th 1923, it is Hosea Kutako which chairs the funerary service of Samuel Maharero who transforms himself into demonstration of distrust and pride of the community of Ovaherero.

In 1925, Hosea Kutako is elected chief of all Ovaherero.

In 1945, it Co-founds the council of the héreros chiefs with Frederick Maharero in exile with the Bechuanaland. This event made of him the father of the Namibian nation because it calls there with the formation of an independent state and with the support of the reverend Michael Scott addresses a petition in this direction to UNO.

In April 1946, South Africa organizes on its side a Référendum in African South-west on the fastening of the territory to the Union of South Africa. The vote in favor of incorporation accepted the support of 208.850 votes against 33.520 opposite. Namas, Damas and Ovahereros constituted the majority of the negative vote.

In 1949, the young person Sam Nujoma who had come to Windhoek to join his uncle Hiskia Kondombolo. to learn the English with the college met Hosea Kutako via its principal.

The November 25th 1950, at the time of the meeting of the Rhenish churches and the parishes Ovaherero, Hosea Kutako made a speech on the Nation, the Laïcité and the right of the people.

In 1955, Hosea Kutako takes part in the creation of " Oruuano Movement" (Oruuano meaning Communion), which asserts the redistribution of the grounds. The leader of the movement is Reinhard Ruzo, former Pasteur of the Rhenish mission which considers " Oruuano Church" like the incarnation of the Nationalism and the propagator of false theories.

In September 1958, Hosea Kutako takes part in a new petition in the United Nations which context, successfully, territorial secession of part of the African south-west requested by South Africa.

The September 27th 1959, it is with the support of the council of Hereros that the " South West African National Union" (" SWANU ") is founded in Windhoek.

After the massacre of " Old Location" in December 1959, Hosea Kutako organizes the exile of many Héreros implied.

In 1960, Ovambanderu d' Epukiro and of Aminuis managed to obtain the recognition of their tribe and their leader, Munjuku Nguvauva II, by South Africa, causing a tribal conflict within the SWANU, shown to take part in the fragmentation of the people héréro. Kutako, 90 years old, was consequently assisted of Clemens Kapuuo in spite of the opposition of the SWANU and Ovambanderu.

The creation of SWAPO the April 19th 1960 with New York by Sam Nujoma was accommodated with benevolence by Hosea Kutako and the council of the héreros chiefs.

In 1964, the Rapport Odendaal was rejected by Clemens Kapuuo in the name of the council héréro.

The September 25th 1964, Hosea Kutako, Mburumba Kerina and Clemens Kapuuo founded the " National Unity Democratic Organization" (NUDO), opposed to the policy of Apartheid but partisane of a federal solution based on the tribal areas for the future of African South-west. The SWAPO and the SWANU, both of Panafrican ideology, refused to join the NUDO.

In 1970, association for the safeguarding of the royal house of Tjamuaha-Maharero was founded by Jephta Maharero in order to counter the claim of Clemens Kapuuo to succeed old Hosea Kutako. The July 18th 1970, 100 years old, Hosea Kutako would die and was buried near Jonker Afrikaner with Okahandja.

The July 20th 1970, Clemens Kapuuo succeeded to him as chief of Ovaherero.

Posterity

With the beginning of the year 2000, the international airport of Windhoek (in the past JG Strijdom) is renamed Hosea Kutako International Airport .
