Horta (the Azores)

Horta (pron. IPA) is a municipality of the west of the the Azores.
The municipality counts a population of 15.224 inhabitants, for a density of 88 habitants/km ² and an total surface area of 173,1 km ².
The municipality occupies the totality of the island of Faial.
History
The city owes its name of Jos van Huerten, governor of the Azores to the XVe century, personality resulting from the Flemish immigration in these islands. The small volcanic cone on the shore in the south of the locality made always it possible to constitute a sure damping, and always protects the port which is one of principal islands.The city in addition a long time accommodated telegraphic relays between the Europe and the America. Prince Albert I of Monaco had installed an oceanographical base there.
