Horsemanship handisport

The horsemanship handisport gathers disciplines of the equestrian Sports. It developed starting from the Années 1970 for the visual, driving or mental handicapped people. The horsemanship is also a means of displacement and a sport of leisure which makes it possible to make Randonnée S.

Rules

Horsemanship handisport complies with the established rules by the international equestrian Fédération, modified by the equestrian International committee paralympic to take account of the Handicap riders.

The rider must carry a costume which comprises a helmet of protection. Since 2002 in international competitions, the rider contributes with its clean Cheval.

The individual test of raising includes/understands an imposed program, with compulsory figures (not, trot or gallop), and a free program, more artistic and carried out in music. The judges give a note ranging between 0 and 10.

The test by team of raising includes/understands an imposed program carried out by two or three athletes, of which at least one of category I or II.

Classification of the handicaps

The athletes are classified in four categories:

  • Category I: athletes having either a deficiency on the level of the balance of the trunk, or a limited motricity of the arms and legs. The athletes of this category use a wheel chair in general.
  • Category II: athletes having either a serious handicap on the level of the balance of the trunk or a serious unilateral handicap. The athletes of this category use a wheel chair in general.
  • Category III: hemiplegic athletes, having an average handicap of the two arms and legs or a serious handicap of the arms or blind athletes. The athletes of this category can walk.
  • Category IV: handicapped athletes of one or two members or visually handicapped persons.

In horsemanship, the men and the women contribute together.

Competition

The first competition of horsemanship handisport took place with New York in 1984.

Horsemanship became an official sport with the paralympic Jeux of Atlanta in 1996. It comprises only tests of raising. In this discipline, gaining it and its horse become all the two Olympic medals.
