Hornoy-the-Borough

Hornoy-the-Borough is a common French, located in the department of the Somme and the area Picardy.

Geography

History

The important current surface of the commune recovers the territory of several old seigniories:
  • that of Hornoy which was a châtellenie,
  • two seigniories of Boisrault of which one belonged to the abbey of Selincourt,
  • that of Gouy-l' Hôpital which belonged to hospital of Midsummer's Day of Jerusalem from where its name,
  • that of Lincheux which concerned Pitch Picquigny then like that of Hallivillers,
  • that of concerning Orival Aumale,
  • that of concerning Pitch Selincourt and where was the abbey of the Holy-Tear founded by happy Milon bishop of Thérouanne in 1131,
  • those of Tronchoy and concerning Bezencourt Hornoy
  • and the important seigniory of Boulainvillers which depended on Airaines.

Occupied at the time Gallo-Roman, the ground of Hornoy given by Pip the Brief to the abbey of Saint-Denis, devastated by the Norman ones, plundered in 1416 and 1432, accepted from Louis XI the granting of fairs and markets.

Civil architecture :
  • Castle of Hornoy* 1780 built by Head, out of brick: plan massed with central rotunda with zenith lighting. Brick manor 16th with not-of-sparrow pinions.
  • Castle of Selincourt* 1734 out of brick and stone: rectangular main building flanked of 2 wings in weak projection and central fore-part with 3 sides, staircase with wrought iron slope 18th, vault, commun runs, old house of the intendant; park having preserved its layout 18th.
  • Castle of Bezencourt beginning 18th very restored after 1945.
  • Market out of wooden of time Charles IX, rebuilt close to the church: old part including/understanding 12 spans of 29 posts (IMH).

  • Vault of Boulainvillers.
  • Ruins of the abbey of the Holy-Tear with Selincourt (disappeared in 1790).

Personalities related to the commune

  1. the countess of Dompierre d' Hornoy, marchioness of Florian, born Marie-Elisabeth Mignot, niece of Voltaire, died in 1771 and buried in Hornoy. Its monument: # Jean-Pierre Claris de Florian, which knew Voltaire by the countess, marries in second weddings of his/her uncle the marquis de Florian and who often remained at it in Hornoy.
