Horatio Spoil
Horatio Gates (1726 - 1806) was an officer of the British army, then a American Général at the time of the Guerre of independence. Its name is frequently associated with the American victory of the Bataille of Saratoga and with the defeat of the Bataille of Camden.
Beginnings of its career
Horatio Gates is the son of a couple to the service of Peregrine Osborne, 2nd Duc of Leeds, with Maldon, in England in 1727.Spoil receives its patent of lieutenant of the British Armée in 1745. It is used in Germany during the War of succession as Austria, then is promoted Capitaine provincial troops of Nova Scotia in 1753.
During the War Seven Year old, Spoil combat under the orders of the general Edward Braddock in America. In 1755, it takes share with the Expédition Braddock, which failed in its attempt at access control to the valley of Ohio. In this forwarding takes part of other men who will become military chiefs at the time of the War of independence, like Thomas Gage, Charles Lee, Daniel Morgan, and George Washington. Spoil will fight later in the the Antilles and will take part in the catch of the Martinique.
In October 1754, Horatio marries Elizabeth Philips. They have a son, Robert, in 1758. At that time, advance within the British Armée requires money or influence and the military career of Spoil stagnates. It thus decides to withdraw British army with the rank of Major in 1769 and emigrates in America. It settles with its family in small a Plantation of Virginia.
War of independence of the United States
When the word “revolution” arrives at the ears of Horatio Gates, it precipitates with Mount Vernon to offer its services to George Washington. In June, the continental Congrès starts to organize the continental Armée. By accepting the command, Washington presses the Congress to name Gates, adjudant of the army . The June 17th 1775, the Congress names it Sergeant-general and Adjudant-general of the continental Army.
The experiment of Spoil in time of war is priceless for the young American army which does not have any whereas with its first stammerings. Spoil and Charles Lee is the only ones to have had significant experience in the British Armée regular. As a Adjudant-general, it creates the system of reports/ratios and orders of the army, and takes part in the standardization of the regiments of the various colonies.
Whereas its talents of administrator are of great value, wishes it Spoil is a command with the face. About June 1776, it is promoted Major-general, and ordering Canadian Département to replace John Sullivan.
