Honorius IV

Giacomo Savelli 1210, † April 3rd 1287), elected pope by the conclave of Perugia in 1285 under the name of Honorius IV . In the Prophecy of Saint Malachie, it is known under the currency “ Ex rosa leonina ”.

Descendant of a Roman aristocratic line, it had been named cardinal by Urbain IV and is the small nephew of Honorius III, of which it takes the first name to go up on the papal throne.

Very few things are known of its life before it is assembled on the papal throne. He studied at the university of Paris.

During its reign it will eliminate from the States of the Church the brigands who infested it. The successor of Charles Ier of Anjou being deceased in 1285, prisoner of the Aragoneses, Honorius IV involves himself in the businesses of the kingdom of Sicily to fight the claims of the Spaniards. He excommunicates Jacques II of Aragon, wire of Pierre III of Aragon, him so deceased this same year, and takes under his protection the future kingdom of Naples, possessions having belonged to Charles Ier of Anjou. He yields Sicily to the Aragoneses and obtains nevertheless a statute very favorable to the clergy. He encouraged the orders beggars but condemns the sect of the apostolic ones, which, in Parma preaches evangelic poverty. He died the April 3rd 1287.
