Hondschoote
Hondschoote ( Hondschote in Dutch) is a common of France, located in the department of the Northern (59) and the area Nord-Pas-de-Calais.
Its inhabitants is called Hondschootois.
Etymology
Hondschoote, in French, does not decide at all as that is written but about eleven coasts . Since 1069, we find Hondescote.Several whimsical translations were proposed:
- Hundo, Germanic name of man, Schot: closed ground.
- Enclosed with the dogs (of Hond: dog and of Schoot, Schoote, Scheute: enclosure (BESCHUTTING)
- Huns Cota would mean also enclosed of Huns, which would have established a camp at the edge of Moëres during the invasion of Gaulle.
Thorough searchs for a specialist in the language Dutchwoman (Mr. Jacques Fermaut) are however really worthy of faith. Hondschoote corresponds to a geographical definition: eminence - 5 to 9 Mr. - of the channel of tide .

The fabric producers are flee to take refuge in current Belgium and in England, making benefit from their know-how the rivals of France.
The Battle of Hondschoote of the 6 to the September 8th 1793, during the Revolution, is an major event which saves the French Republic. This army, reinforced by troops hanovriennes and Austrian under the orders of the marshal Freitag, come from the close Netherlands, is beaten by an army of patriotic volunteers. During the battle, the windmill is used as station of guet and infirmary.
