Honda CB 750 Furnace
The Honda CB 750 Furnace is a model of Motocyclette produces starting from 1968, and which marks, for the majority of the observers, the passage to the era of the modern motor bike.
A little history
At the end of the XIXe century, the motor cycle is born, in the form of a Bicyclette motorized (of other forms, as the Moteur S auxiliaries for bicycles will be tested).
The practice of the motor bike, at that time, concerns the course of the combatant:
- component engine with the free air, sprinkling Oil all the environment, of which the pilot
- delicate Starting
- Brake S symbolic systems or non-existent
- comfort and Handling embryonic
- rudimentary reliability
- important maintenance
- etc
At that time, the motor cycle is especially intended for professional uses: Army, etc
Helping progress, the motor bike improves, but preserves its simple origins. It becomes the car the poor one.
After the Second world war, the industrial merger makes disappear the majority from the manufacturers of motor bikes.
The principal surviving marks are British (Norton, Triumph), German are (BMW, especially confined in the top-of-the-range utility), Italy (Moto Guzzi, Ducati) or American (Harley-Davidson). The France remains a manufacturer of utilities of small Cylindrée (Motobécane, Vélosolex, Peugeot).
At the beginning of the Years 1960, the Japan board, which were interested in the motor bike after the war, arrive in Occident with a financial and technological power impressive. They start by sitting their notoriety by the competition, engaging of the models very sophisticated in the races on track: two Cylinder S for one 50 cm, five for one 125, six for one 250, the whole with 4 Valve S by cylinder, Double camshaft at the head, and distracting Mode S (up to 18.000 tr/min).
Towards 1965, Japanese thus finds a favorable ground in Europe and with the the United States:
- the European manufacturers almost disappeared;
- they have a good notoriety (they gained all the championships almost);
- they understood that the Westerners are ready to buy motor cycles again, for little that they allure them.
The four Japanese famous brands leave the models small to rolled average, which give wire already well to retordre with the British, of much big-engined car.
The first clap of thunder comes in 1965, when Honda leaves CB 450, double ACT, electric Démarreur, 170 km/h.
As of this moment, the race with the improvements and the power is committed among Japanese, with 4-stroke engines at Honda, and two times at the others.
Whereas the market is directed in the East, Honda leaves, in 1969, the motor bike which will mark its century: 750 to four cylinders.
Advantages and disadvantages of the 750 Furnace
None the characteristics of Honda 750 is single:
- 4 cylinders: there is of it since 1903 (FN)
- simple Camshaft at the head
- 67 horses (Kawasaki 500 H1 in has almost as much)
- 4 Carburateur S
- Electric starter
- Allumage battery - winds
- front brake with disc hydraulic, back with drum
- suspension with telescopic Fourche hydraulic with before and oscillating Bras with the back
- 190 km/h
Apart from the hydraulic disc brake, revolution for the time (many pilots of competition will mount on their motor bike a brake of origin of 750 Honda of tourism, like Christian Ravel, on its Kawasaki H 1R), the other characteristics are known.
Then, why Honda 750 have will such a prestige?
Probably because it is the first time that as many qualities is joined together on the same motor bike: a motor bike able to go up to almost 200 km/h, but easy to start, without excessive vibrations, clean, with equipment of quality (Meter S, Flickering S, Control unit S, etc), an irreproachable completion, an attractive esthetics, Chromium S of quality, a powerful and complete electric system, Rear view mirror S usable, etc
Contrary to two Japanese times, the four legs does not smoke, does not roast its candles with all the corners of street, does not absorb its tank between two service stations, in short, it remains usable.
Moreover, the Marketing will do its work well, for example by imposing four exhausts separated for marking well the difference with the other motor bikes in its time.
However, it has also disadvantages. A hesitant handling, a braking well in-on this side current standards (but the best of the time), a lighting faiblard, unnamable tires of origin, a fragile chain of transmission secondary, etc
But, basic qualities of this motor bike - esthetics between other place it so much above the others that the accessories suppliers will precipitate to give him missing qualities: Tire S Europeans, Headlight S with Iodine, second disc brake with before (the fork is designed to accommodate a second disc without modification), kits chains duplex, etc
Certain workshops, like Japauto, will market kits 900 cm, and will make a misfortune in competition (endurance).
Four years will have to be waited, with the Kawasaki 900 Z1 to see on our roads a more prestigious machine.
