Geography

History

Resulting from a known Gallo-Roman villa under the name of Aldomus , Homps quickly developed with the point to form in a few centuries a flourishing and prosperous village.

To the the Middle Ages, the stronghold passed under the authority of Hospital of the Ordre of Midsummer's Day of Jerusalem which made of it the seat of the one of their more important commanderies. Devastated during the Crusade against the Albigensians, the village was again devastated at the time of the wars of religion.

But the construction of the Canal of the South in 1666 enabled him to know a considerable economic advancement. Homps became indeed not only the third port of the Channel but also one of only where the barges could operate what made genuine plate-revolving shipping of it at that time.

The surrounding vine, although shaken by the Phylloxera, fed this trade and contributed to the development of the village. It was thus during long decades a ceaseless ballet of boats coming to load barrels and barrels bound for the large ports with Bordeaux, Toulouse and Sète.
