Holy Wood (In the Shadow off the Valley off Death)
Holy Wood (In the Shadow off the Valley off Death) (In the Shade of the Valley of Dead) is an album of Marilyn Manson.
Left the November 13rd 2000, it is the album answer to the Massacre of the college of Columbine the April 20th 1999, whose Marilyn Manson was the scapegoat for certain media. The principal subject of the album relates to the culture of the celebrity to America, its obsession for the weapons and its fascination for death and the martyr, and more particularly the fame - propelled by the media - which a violent death can have.
In the words of the reverend, we can observe many references, such as John F. Kennedy, John Lennon and other people who gained their statutes of martyrs in the American culture thanks to their deaths.
The album Holy Wood, although it left after, introduced his two predecessors, Mechanical Animals and Antichrist Superstar. For this reason we can speak about trilogy. The main character of the history is Adam, who already appeared as the Omega androgyne in Mechanical Animals and a worm in Antichrist Superstar. We find also " White" coma; , famous, " Black" coma;. The history tells the rise of Adam to the capacity, his fight against God, the rise of the people of the Valley of Death, until the suicide.

Cultural reference
In 2004 in stores Rolling Stone an article is published in which Manson explains which role the media play in the creation of immortal icons of the musical culture starting from died artists, admitting by there that Lamb off God (lamb of God) was inspired to him by Kurt Cobain and Jim Morisson. The illustration of this idea can be found in the song “Lamb off God” where Marilyn sings:- Yew you die when there' S No one watching,
- Then your ratings drop and you' Re forgotten.
- Goal yew they kill you one the TV,
- You' Re has martyr and has Lamb God off.
- Then your ratings drop and you' Re forgotten.
-
If you die when nobody looks at
- Your audience rating falls and you are forgotten
- But if they kill you on line on TV
- You are a martyrdom and a lamb of God
- Your audience rating falls and you are forgotten
The Nobodies seems to cover subject directly:
- We are the nobodies, wanna Be somebodies.
- When we' Re dead, they' L know just who we are.
-
We are nobody, wanting to be somebody
- When we die, they will know which we are
Also:
- Somme children died the other day;
- We EDF machines and then we prayed.
- Puked up and down in morbid faith;
- You should cuts seen the ratings that day.
- We EDF machines and then we prayed.
-
Some children died the other day
- We nourished the machine and we requested
- Dégueulis on a morbid faith
- You should have seen the TV rating this day
- We nourished the machine and we requested
Critical
Although acclaimed by criticisms and being most popular among the new fans, this album is that which was most badly sold among those of the artist. After having begun thirteenth from the Billboard 200, it left it in the weeks which followed.
Trivia
- “GodeatGod” the track opening the album, is a word game referring to the expression for the term “Dog eat Dog” which means competition without pity, the law of the strongest.
- “The Love Song” criticizes the obsession of the american company with Christianity, the firearms and patriotism.
- “The Fight Song” comprises this sentence: “The death off one has tragedy, goal the death off has million is just has statistic” (the death of somebody is a tragedy, but the death of a million people is right statistics). This is a quotation of Joseph Stalin.
- “Disposable Teens” was the first individual one of the album. It is said that Marilyn Manson copied its hit “The Beautiful People” with this song. It also contains an allusion to the book of George Orwell, 1984. He says “has rebel from the waist down” (a rebel with low size/of the size to the feet). It is a recovery partial of a counterpart of the main character to that with which it has a primarily carnal relation. This recovery is also probably a word game (size with the feet becomes here “with low size”, probably in reference to the pants of the young people).
- “Target Audience” is a word game used to make fun of the media whose single interest is the TV rating.
- The term “Holy Wood” (being able to be translated by the “Holy Forest”, or the “Forest of God”) was used once in a poem of Aleister Crowley, poem to which Marilyn Manson rather frequently refers. It is also used in order to make fun of Hollywood, as the cover of CD shows it.
- At the time of the American round of 2000 “God, Guns and Government”, the Christian lobby made circulate petitions in order to prevent Marilyn Manson from playing on scene “The Nobodies” because of the reference to the shooting of Columbine.
- the first letter of the title of each section of the album forms the word “ADAM”
- The title of the album and the song refers to the Psalm 23 of the Bible.
- “Cruci-Fiction in Space” was used for the publicity of the Xbox 360 and for that of the play of PlayStation 3 The Darkness.
- The song “President Dead” lasts exactly 3 min 13, probable reference to image 313 of film of Abraham Zapruder on the assassination of president JFK which is the precise moment where Kennedy receives the fatal ball.
