Holy Week with Tarente

The rites of the Holy Week to Tarente are deeply enracinés in the time and the heart of the townsmen. The demonstrations which point out the Passion and the Death of our Lord have many affinities with those of certain towns of Spain, thing which is explained by the long domination why Spain exerted on our city. The Holy Week begins Sunday which precedes Easter and which is called Palm Sunday , in remembering the entry of Jesus to Jerusalem. This day, after long and complicated religious offices, between parents, friends, or simply between neighbors, one exchanges a small branch of olive-tree or a palm braided in the shape of cross, like symbol and pledge of peace.

The following days, in the churches, of the particular offices take place, supplemented by artistic and religious events pointing out the death of Jesus. At the beginning of the aprèsmidi, the Maundy Thursday , two monks of the congregation of Carmel leaves the church: it is lo first post office which begins the pilgrimage and visits the Sépulcre prepared in each church, while following a meticulous ritual. To regular intervals, other couples of monk leave lo even church and, barefeet, cross the city and enter each church to kneel in front of the Sépulcre . These pilgrims with the characteristic dress by its form, its colors and its details, the covered face of a narrow cap, bored of two holes corresponding oux eyes, is called perdune ; they sumbolisent old the fratres poenitentiae , with the research of the Pardon of God .

At midnight, church Holy Dominique, leaves the procession the Addolorata (the Mère of the Pains ). This evocative procession gathers a crowd of faithful. With very slow steps, similar to the movements of a lullaby, the sound of the funeral marches and the trembling gleam of the candles, the procession proceeds in a long walk and exténuante, which finishes the Good Friday , after more than twelve hours of pilgrimage.

A few hours later, the church of Carmel the procession leaves the Mystères , which proceeded for the first time between the end of the 17th century and the beginning of the 18th century, on the initiative of noble the tarentin Diego Calò. To the first crowned images of Dead Jesus and Happy Mother of the Pains, with time six others were added some. In an atmosphere of major faith, the procession which causes a great emotion crosses the city to finish at the fallen night.

The Easter Saturday is one day of sadness and meditation until midnight. Then, after a moving religious ceremony, the bells break out, and their merry chime announces that Christ is ressuscity.
