Holy-Sophie Basilica of Sofia

The Basilique Holy-Sophie is oldest orthodoxe church of Sofia.

“ Sveta Sofia ” is in fact the church which gave its name to the capital, during the 15th century. It is the largest Byzantine basilica , built apart from Constantinople at the 6th century, of the time of Justinien Magne.

The simplicity of red bricks dates Des. Under the Othoman reign , it was transformed into Mosquée but after the Earthquake of 1818 had made fall the Minaret and that a second 40 years later had killed two wire of the Imam, it was given up and restored in church after the release.

After large renovation works, it reopened with the public there is less than 5 years.

She plays a big role in the life day laborer of Sofiotes.
