Holy-Réparate Cathedral of Nice
The Holy-Réparate cathedral of Nice (under the Holy invocation of Réparate), located in the old city (Old man-Nice), was built between 1650 and 1699, year of its dedication.
Succeeding Sainte-Marie of the Castle which was cathedral since the 11th century, the modest Holy-Réparate church becomes, after work of enlarging, cathedral in 1531. However, considering the building too small, the bishop Didier Palletis entrusts in 1649, with the architect Jean-Andre Guibert, the construction of a building more in connection with the importance of the city.
Originally rectangular and directed towards north, the cathedral is rebuilt on the model of the Holy-Suzanne church of Rome: a plan in Latin cross, directed towards the east, with a cupola, with the tiles of color glazed with the génoise mode, the Transept crossing . The building is of style Baroque.
Since its construction, several rehandlings were made: a Bell-tower, built between 1731 and 1757, was added, masking the cupola partially; a frontage baroque was plated on the original frontage between 1825 and 1830 and finally, between 1900 and 1903, a Abside was added on each side of the chorus.
Interior, also of style baroque, account ten vaults: Madonna-of-Seven-Pains, Crucifixion, Holy-Rose-of-Lima, Saint-Alexandre-and-Barthelemy, the Blessed Sacrament, Holy-Rosalie and the Virgin, Saint-Joseph, Holy-Réparate, Four-Martyr-Crowned and Saint-Jean-Baptist. Until the end of the 17th century, these vaults belonged to private individuals or corporations which had as a load to maintain them.
The high altar is surmounted by a representation of the Gloire of Holy Réparate , virgin martyrdom whose remainders rest in the cathedral since 1690.
Organ of the cathedral
The cathedral has three Orgue S:
- large organ placed above the narthex, on a platform;
- choir organ, placed on the left transept;
- organ of the choral society in the room of repetition.
One owes the rebuilding of the large organ (initially one Hammered 1901) with the factor Jean-Wolf Bushel, wire of Robert Boisseau (who had considerably reduced his activities following the accident of car which had it a few years deeply tested before), which carried it out in 1974 less " on the plans" of Pierre Cochereau that according to a " book of the charges" interesting in particular the composition, in which it had taken an active part with its usual competence and its faithful friendship for the factors in question. It is about a neo-classic organ having 4 keyboards and 69 plays. The holder is currently Catherine Milhères who succeeded Jean Wallet in 2005. The instrument is unfortunately tiny room to silence since March 2005 and requires important repairs. Here the composition of this organ:
The choir organ is one Hammered beginning of 20th. The organ of the choral society was initially the personal organ of the canon Henri Carol, moved after its accidental death in 1984.
