Holy-Mother-church

Holy-Mother-Church is a chief town of canton department of the Manche, in the area Basse-Normandie, in France.

Its inhabitants is called the Holy-Mother-Églisais .

Geography

History

Sanctae Mariae Ecclesia, Ecclesia de Sancte Maria, Holy-Marie-Church, as many names in the old files which ended in the current name of Holy-Mother-Église.Lorsque, at the beginning of XIIe century, the first stone of the church of Holy-Mother is posed, the parish is already in place. The site of the village in the middle of the Lime pit and close to the coast will support the circulation of the ideas, just as its situation privileged on a Roman transportation route. Its history began quite front " the day more long" , with Guillaume of Holy-Mother-Church, crowned bishop of London in 1199, the devastations of the English troops in XIVe century, the plague, the wars of religion, the existence of an important Protestant community with XVIIe, the revolution of 1789, chouans with the execution into 1796 of their chief, the Viscount of Bricqueville, the Napoleonean epopee, the municipal life under the Second Empire, etc… (Sources: Maurice Lecoeur " Holy-Mother-church, 1082-1944" editions Fanval 1988)

June 6th 1944: Parachuting of the forces allied, American, 14.000 men of the 82e Airborne Division US ( 82nd Airborne ) at the time of the Operation Overlord. The takeover of the city is reserved for the 82e Airborne Division in practice US, of many para of the 101e Airborne Division US also took part in the catch of the city - because of error of dropping.

The soldier John Steele became famous to be remained hung with the Clocher of the church.

Heraldic
