Holy-Madeleine abbey of Barroux

The Holy-Madeleine abbey of Barroux is an abbey of monks Benedictines of the congregation of Subiaco located at the Barroux in the Vaucluse.

History

In August 1970, a young monk Benedictine, the Father Gerard Calvet leaves the Abbaye Notre-Dame de Tournay with the agreement of his Abbot and settles in Bédoin, small village of Vaucluse. It wishes food the rule of Benoît saint in fidelity with the Roman liturgical traditions. He is quickly joined by some young people who wish food the life bénédictine.

In 1976, it approaches the movement of M {{gr.}} Lefebvre and the relations with Tournay are broken. In 1978, within sight of the growth of the young community, a ground of thirty hectares is acquired between Ventoux and Laces of Montmirail, on the commune of Barroux. The monastery breaks its bonds with the mobility of the Fraternité Saint-Pie X at the time of the sacring of bishops that Mgr Lefebvre carries out without pontifical mandate in 1988. Following the Motu landlord Ecclesia Dei, Rome grants to the monastery a canonical statute: Dom Dammertz, Abbot Primacy of the Benedictines, comes to promulgate the decree of erection in abbey, signed in June 1989.

In October 1989, the work of abbey is completed and it is devoted under the term of holy Madeleine.

In 2002, whereas the monks are nearly 70, a foundation is made with Saint-Pierre-with-Clairac in the Lot-et-Garonne: the Sainte-Marie Monastery of the Guard

In November 2003, the founding father resigns his load. The Louis-Marie Father is elected abbot.

Spiritual retirements

According to the tradition of the bénédictines abbeys, the abbey has a hotel trade is open all the year (except January) to the Sirs and young people for stays in spiritual matter or individual retirements or in group.
