History
The monastery was founded in 1277 by Béatrix of the Tower of the Pine, widow of Guillaume of Roussillon killed in Croisade and of which she wanted to honor the memory by the prayer. To be done it turned naturally to the Religious order of the Chartreux, to which one belonged of his/her uncles. It had a Forteresse on the current site of the village of Holy-Cross-in-Jarez, strategic crossroads of the Route S coming from the Auvergne and the valleys of the the Rhone and the Gier. This fortress does not exist any more and it only remains about it very little of traces in the documents of time. The primitive church of the Monastère was built not far from the fortress, thing rare for the time since the Carthusian monks, lived in community, but like hermits, without addressing the word, further possible from the Agglomération S. Béatrix the right to remain until its death in 1307 close it had negotiated monastery and to attend since a small arranged cabin with the side of the church the offices; the whole in exchange of the Legacy of the grounds or was building the monastery. She undoubtedly lived in the fortress with her eight children and her continuation. Archaeological excavations in 1896 made it possible to find its fall (like that of Thibaud de Vassalieu) into the chorus of the primitive church, which because of its bad condition is used today as appendix with the sacristy.
At the 18th century a Incendie damages part of the roof of the church, the Moine S move this one in the chapter room and the refectory which are adjacent church. This change was to be provisional, the goal being in the long term to repair the church, but also to reorganize the monastery in a style more Baroque, according to the plans of another chartreuse of Lyon, with which Holy-Cross maintained good relationships.
The Révolution came all chambouler. The current parish church is always in this same place. The community of Fathers and Brothers was maintained until in 1792, then confiscated like national good at the time of the Revolution. The monastery was sold with the biddings in 1794 in 44 batches with the families of the surroundings which were established inside this one. With the Restoration, the Carthusian monks by no means sought to take again their good, it would have been necessary on the one hand to negotiate with each of the 44 families, but especially the beginning of the industrialization of the valley of the Gier made insulation necessary to the monks too much random. The monastery thus remained a village under the name of Holy-Cross-in-Pavezin , because it depended then on the common neighbor of Pavezin. Becoming an independent commune in 1888, the village took the name of Holy-Cross-in-Jarez . In 1840 the cloister of the second court was demolished to facilitate the passage of the carts. It is as at that time as the cabin of Béatrix was destroyed to build the current Clocher, the old one threatening to crumble. The Voûte S out of stone of the primitive church were dismounted and replaced by a wooden carpentry.
The name of the primitive fortress is unknown, it seems probable that of Holy Cross was thereafter selected by the monks Chartreux who venerated the Holy-Cross like symbol of the Chrétienté, their currency was besides “ Stat Crux dum volvitur orbis ” (“the world turns, the Croix remains”).
The symbol is a cross on a sphere surmounted by seven stars. It is possible to admire of it a Sculpture above the porch of entry of the monastery.

Foundation. The current structure of the monastery in 2006 is recent (compared to the date of very old foundation of Chartreuse). The initial act of February 24th, 1280 spent with Taluyers in the presence of Pierre Flote damoiseau, legist of the future Humbert dolphin of the Tower (brother of Béatrix of Roussillon) and of king de France, ratified this foundation following the example Béatrix born of the Tower (of the Pine) resulting from a pious family very near to the Carthusian monks.
Preamble with the legend of Holy-Cross-in-Jarez. In 1274 the greatest Council of Christendom in Lyon took place where, in the absence of decision for hypothetical a ninth crusade, the sending of a new quota of French forces to Saint-Jean-in Acre was ratified by the king Philippe III Bold the and the pope Gregoire X. It was not of a reinforcement but about a force of interposition. The Christians, exacerbated by the fall of the Holy Places and the blockade of Saint-Jean-in Acre by the Moslems, entredéchiraient themselves within the kingdom of Jerusalem. Guillaume of Roussillon saw himself entrusted the delicate mission to calm the belligerents in the event of disappearance of the knight Olivier de Termes who then occupied the post of captain of the French forces with Saint-Jean-in Acre. Whereas his/her Aymar brother of Roussillon east archbishop of Lyon, Guillaume of Roussillon prepares to leave after having carried out his will in August 1275 in his castle with Annonay. Olivier de Termes deceased, Guillaume of Roussillon lord of Annonay, of Roussillon, of Châteauneuf (close to Bank-of-Gier) and of Dargoire, will install with his troops of Acute-Dead according to the royal decree. He discharges too well his mission with the taste of his cousin Guillaume de Beaujeu Grand Main of Temple, but especially of Charles of Anjou king de Sicile and brother of Louis IX (Louis saint). Faithful to his convictions and king de Jérusalem Hugues de Lusignan, Guillaume of Roussillon will not yield to the claims his last and will undergo a coup d'etat armed on Saint-Jean-in Acre in May 1277. He will disappear from the political scene according to the Chronicle of the Crusades. In the formal and official absence of its skin, 7 months are passed before his Béatrix wife finally decides to open the will in January 1278. From there rises the dream and the Cartusienne legend with the appearances which will lead it to found chartreuse Holy-Cross of Pavezin.
