Holy-Colome

Holy-Colome is a common French, located in the department of the Yrénées-Atlantiques and the area Aquitaine.
The inhabitants are called the Saint-Colombians or Saint-Colomois.

Its name inhabitant of Béarn is Senta-Coloma .

Geography

Hydrography

The commune is crossed by one afflent Béez (affluent of the Gave of Pau), the brook the Landistou (12,5 km in France).
Holy-Colome is also sprinkled by the brook of Ombratiou and its affluent, the brook of the fountain of Mesplé, itself fed on the territory of the commune by the brook of Subercase. The brook of Ombratiou is thrown in the Lestarrès brook, tributary of Béez.

Toponymy

The toponym appears in the forms Sancta-Columba (about 1100, titles of Mifaget), Feels-Colome (1277, cartulaire of Ossau or Red book ), Sanctus-Silvester of Holy-Colome (1655, insinuations of the diocese of Oloron), Holy-Coulomme (1752, enumeration of Holy-Colome), Holy-Colomme (1863, dictionary of Paul Raymond).

According to the legend the name comes from holy Colombe, young martyrdom about year 300.

History

Paul Raymond note which the commune counted a laic abbey, vassal of the Viscount of Béarn.
In 1385, Holy-Colome counted 91 fires and depended on the Bailliage of Ossau.
