Holy-Catherine (Quebec)

Holy-Catherine is a city in suburbs of Montreal in the regional Municipalité of county of Roussillon to the Quebec (Canada), located in the administrative area of the Montérégie. With the Census of 2001, the city counted 15.953 inhabitants. Today, in 2006, according to the official site of the municipality of Holy-Catherine, it counts some a little more than 17.000.

History

Occupied territory for more than three centuries, since the foundation of the mission of the Iroquois in 1676, it has been only into 1937 that the erection of the municipality of the parish of Holy-Catherine de Laprairie marks really the base of a territorial organization. In 1973, following a demographic explosion, the parish obtains finally the statute of Ville and becomes the Town of Holy-Catherine.

Economic development

In 1934, the inauguration of the Bridge Honore-Draper, which connects Kahnawake, an Amerindian territory which delimits the west coast of the city, and Chateauguay in the South of the island of Montreal largely stimulated the economy. About thirty years later, the opening of the Pont Champlain also largely helped with the regional economy. Moreover, the construction of the lock of the sea route of the St-Laurent who passes through Holy-Catherine, at the end of the years 1950, also made climb with this small municipality a very great jump in term of socio-economic development.

Attractions

One of greatest attractions tourist of the city is the Récré-O-Park, a refuge of migratory birds arranged for the rambles or with bicycle in edge of the rapids of Lachine. It is also a place privileged for the picnics, the fishing or the sports of beach. In addition, the splendid panorama which the Récré-O-Park can offer to you is unquestionably one of most beautiful bank of the St-Laurent.

The Récré-O-Park contains also a beach closed where, for a moderate price, the visitors can bathe and be made bronze, while benefitting from environment and faunal diversity. The inhabitants of the city can benefit from it free.
