Holy-Angele-of-Mérici

Holy-Angele-with-Mérici is a municipality belonging to the regional Municipalité of county of Mitis with the Quebec (Canada), located in the administrative area of the Low-Saint-Laurent.

Holy-Angele-of-Mérici was set up in 1869, one year after the canonical erection of the parish of which it took again the denomination. This one constituted the first of the 29 parishes rested by the bishop of Rimouski of then, monseigneur Jean Langevin. The territory is sprinkled by the Mitis river, with ten kilometers in the Mount-Pretty south-east of , in the back-country. The municipal name evokes Angèle Merici (1474-1540), Italian nun which founds the congregation of the Ursulines in 1535 and takes up the duties of higher general of 1537 to 1540. Its canonization will intervene in 1807. The name pays also homage to Angèle Drapeau, seigneuress of Lepage-and-Thivierge, bienfaitrice of the parish.

The municipality of the village of Holy-Angele-of-Mérici, created in 1917, and that of the parish amalgamated in 1989 to form the current municipality.
