Holocaust
The word holocaust is a term religious which indicates “the sacrifice by the fire of a male animal to the dress linked” after immolation, in accordance with the tradition of the Judaïsme (see for the procedure in the Bible the book Lévitique chapter 1 verses 1 to 17); it appeared in French at the 13th century of our era, borrowed in the French translation of the Bible from the Latin ecclesiastical holocaustum , itself drawn from the Greek ὁλόκαυστον (of ὅλος hólos “in entirety” and καυστός kaústos “to burn”).
The Greek practiced also a form of holocaust within the framework of the ritual chtoniens, l'ἐνάγισμα ( enágisma ).
One used it by extension of direction to mean “the most constraining form of religious worship”, from where the expression “Better is worth the offering than the sacrifice, better the sacrifice is worth than the holocaust” (Leonce Bourliaguet).
The terms holocaust and shoah
At the end of the 20th century, American Réalisateur S used this term in an unsuitable meaning to refer to the Génocide S by the left Nazi in Germany under the Third Reich. This extermination particularly aimed at the people Juif, which resulted in the death of approximately six million among the first.
This term was already of use at the 19th century in the French language to indicate the systematic massacre of a social or ethnic group.
By extension the term was also used to describe the systematic murder of other groups, exterminated in the same circumstances by the Nazis such as the handicapped physical and mental, the homosexual , the political dissidents, the communist Tziganes, , the pacifist , the Témoins of Christian Jéhovah and others being opposed to the Nazism, the Russian, the Polish and other people Slaves, the whole bordering a number of victims of about ten to twelve million. Today, the term is sometimes used to describe other attempts at genocide, at the same time before and after the Second world war.
To indicate the genocide of the Jews by the Nazis, the European French-speaking people rather employ however the term of Shoah (Hebrew “catastrophe” in ) since a homonymous realization of Claude Lanzmann gathering testimonys of survivors of the death camps. Turned in 1985 and of a purified style (the images are those of what there remained camps in 1985), this one total duration old film of 9:30 was regarded as an historical event and cinematographic major.
