History

André Rauch shows in Vacances in France of 1830 to our days that the statute of the holidays has radically changed for two centuries.
  • At the XIXe century, the holidays were a primarily aristocratic and middle-class value: it is time when the rich person do not do anything (vacancy wants to say " vide").
  • They are the English who, the first, used the holidays to travel, for medical and cultural reasons (the Riviera about 1880).
  • From the end of the year 1940, with the appearance of the popular cars, the holidays become on the contrary one moment when one moves, where one travels. With the rise of publicity, it is now when nothing is done, when one remains at home, that one thinks of having missed his holidays.
