Holden Caulfield is a character created by the American writer J.D. Salinger. It is about a teenager, hero of the novel the Catch-Hearts ( The Catcher in the Rye ), the most famous work of Salinger published in 1951.
Description of the character
Holden Caulfield is one of the most outstanding characters of the literature of the 20th century.In the Catch-Hearts , Caulfield is 17 years old. He reports events which have occurred in the previous months, whereas he was 16 years old. He flees of the secondary school which he attends, a few days before Christmas, and wanders in the town of New York.
The character also appears under the name Holden Morrisey Caulfield in a news of Salinger entitled Slight Rebellion off Madison , published by The New Yorker the December 22nd 1946.
Popular culture
In the popular culture, one on television counts several references to Holden Caulfield, the cinema, and in the music.- a song entitled Who Wrote Holden Caulfield? (“Which wrote Holden Caulfield? ”) on the album Kerplunk (1992) of the group American Punk Green Day is found. The singer of the group, Billie Joe Armstrong, quoted already The Catcher in the Rye as his preferred book, and estimates that Holden Caulfield was punk before the word even does not exist.
