Hobart is the capital and the most populated city state of Tasmanie, in Australia. Founded in 1804 as a penal Settlement, it is the second older capital of State of Australia after Sydney.

Initially called Hobart Town or Hobarton , it holds its name of Robert Hobart, former Secretary of State to the War and the Colonies. Located at the mouth of the Derwent, it is protected by the Mont Wellington in the west and the Mont Nelson in the south. The port of Hobart is used as point of anchoring with the Australian and French antarctic forwardings (Ad3elie coast).

It is in Hobart that Roald Amundsen, of return of the conquest of the South pole, accosts on March 7th, 1912 and sends, from the central post office, a cable to announce to the king Norway, Haakon VII, and in the world the success of its forwarding.

It is the birthplace of Errol Flynn which was born there on June 20th 1909.

History

The first colony pénitientiaire was established in 1803 with Ridson Cove, on bank is Derwent river. In 1804, it was relocated towards a better site, where currently the city is. The first inhabitants, members of the wandering tribe of Mouheneer, quickly were driven out or killed, when they did not succumb to the diseases imported by the colonists.

Derwent being one of the best deep water ports of Australia, as well as the center commercial of the Seal and the Whale in the South Seas, the city developed quickly and attracted many industries. It took the name of Hobart in 1875.

Geography

The commercial downtown area is located on western bank of Derwent, close to Sullivan' S Cove, while the interior suburbs skirt two banks and rise with the foot of the Wellington mount. The port occupies the totality of Sullivan' S Cove.

Large Hobart is composed of three autonomous communes, Hobart, Glenorchy and Clarence, to which the urban areas of the municipalities of Kingborough and Brighton are added.

In the west of Hobart, the Vallée of Styx is one of the areas of Tasmanie where deforestation is massive. Trees as high as the turns of Notre-Dame de Paris can finish out of paper pulp. Only the specimens of more than 85 meters in height are protected.

Climate

Hobart profits from a moderate oceanic climate, with four distinct seasons. The recorded maximum temperature was of 40,8° C the the January 4th 1976, lowest of -2,8° C the June 25th 1972. Hobart is the second town of Australia whose average daily sunning is weakest with 5,9 hours, behind Melbourne.

Demography

Large Hobart counted 240' 000 inhabitants at the time of the census of 2005. The town of Hobart counted of them 47' 319 with the census of 2001. Approximately 17,5% of the inhabitants were born overseas, mainly with the the United Kingdom, in New Zealand and Italy.
