Hoël II of Brittany
Hoël II , known as Houel Huuel into Breton and Hoël of Cornwall in French was count of Cornwall and Nantes, then duke of Brittany of 1066 with 1084. Born towards 1027/1028, Hoël was the oldest son of Alain Canhiart, count de Cornouaille, and of Judith, girl and heiress of Judicaël, count de Nantes.
He became count de Cornouaille with dead of his father in 1058, and count de Nantes, field which he managed already, after the death of his/her mother in 1063. In order to reinforce the control of the house of Cornwall on the Nantes one, it made elect (1059), then to devote (1061) as bishop of the city his brother puîné Guérech. Died of Guérech in 1079, his/her younger brother Benoit, abbot of Holy Cross of Quimperlé since 1066, succeeded to him the head of évêché.
Hoël married Havoise of Brittany, girl of the duke Alain III of Brittany and sister of Conan II of Brittany. With died of this sum of money, he thus became duke consort of Brittany the December 11th 1066. Only the county of Rennes escaped its authority, having been given to the count Geoffroy Grenonat, an illegitimate son of Alain III.
During the principat of Hoël the Breton lords who had taken part in the conquest of the England with William the Conqueror obtained important strongholds in England.
The beginning of its reign was calm but his Havoise wife died in 1072. Hoël then had to face between 1075 and 1077 with a revolt of feudal Breton carried out by Geoffroy Boterel wire of Éon Ier de Penthièvre, Geoffroy Grenonat, Eudon de Porhöet, of the lords of High Brittany but also of its patrimonial stronghold of Cornwall.
Hoël came to end from the rebels only with the assistance from William the Conqueror and the intervention in the engagements from his/her oldest son Alain Fergent.
The duke Hoël resided at Quimper and Nantes with his court among which one raises the presence of a harpist Cadiou citharista .
Hoël died the April 13rd 1084. From its union with Havoise of Brittany were born five children:
