Synopsis

Advertisement of the danger

On the island of Amity, young people make a night festival on a beach. One of the young women present, Chrissie Watkins (Susan Backlinie), flees of the group followed by an young man. Part to take a bath of midnight, it runs in the dunes, while being stripped. It plunges in the obscure sea, without being accompanied by the young man who crumbles on the shore, too drunk to remove all his clothing and not enough lucid to swim. It remains on the beach while it carries out some pitch-stirrers with the broad one. After some time, something located under water surface the cramp, it whirls, howls, struggles, clings to a floating bell, before disappearing definitively under the floods.

The next morning, Martin Brody (Roy Scheider), originating in New York which was recruited for the summer season as a chief of the local police, goes on the spot. Discussing with the young man who announced the disappearance of Chrissie Watkins of their origins, they are challenged by whistles of a police officer who has just discovered behind a dune the arm already putrefied of the victim.

Returned in its office, it receives the report/ratio of the medical examiner (Robert Nevin) who indicates that death occurred by attack of shark. On office, it decides to place on the beaches of the island of the panels “prohibited bathe”, which arrives at knowknowing the mayor. After having taken knowledge of the program of the day, Brody goes on a beach where a pack of Louvetot S. the mayor bathes, an adviser and the medical examiner joins it. Larry Vaughan , mayor of Amity (Murray Hamilton), is firmly opposed to closing beaches which would ruin the tourist season of the island, the more so as one is on Saturday, June 29 and until many estivants is waited for on July 4th, day of national Festival celebrating the American independence of 1776. He prefers speech of an accident of to a propeller, which the medical examiner is ready to confirm in his final official report, thus returning on these dires.

The danger is specified

Martin Brody thus turns over to supervise the principal beach, very tended, attentive with the least movements in water. A dog and young children bathe. Pipett, a black Labrador, disappears. Then it is the turn of the young person Alex Mr. Kintner (Jeffrey Voorhees), left to bathe on an air mattress, to be made devour by a shark. Crowd panics.

Following this event, Mrs Kintner (Lee Fierro) deposits signs downtown and passes from the advertisements in the press declaring that it offers 3.000 dollars to which will kill the shark.

The mayor must then face a problem become public. He joins together notable city in order to decide the procedure to follow. Obliged well to close the beaches, it unilaterally decides, without informing Brody of it, that it will be for 12 midnight only. It is as announced at this meeting as the local authorities will call upon a biologist of the oceanographical institute of the continent, Matt Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss). Then at the bottom of the room, an old old seaman, Quint (Robert Shaw), propose to drive out and kill the shark, but for a reward of 10.000 dollars which it will not divide with anybody other. The meeting is closed on these entrefaits.

The fishermen amateurs try to capture the shark

The following night, in order to touch the premium of 3.000 dollars, Mr. Denherder (Edward Jr Chambers.) and his friend Charlie (Robert Chambers) use a roast as soft food. This one is gobé by the shark which tears off part of the pontoon where the two men are installed. Charlie falls to water, misses being made devour, but leaves itself there unscathed.

On Tuesday, July 2, the biologist arrives on the island whereas many unloaded fishermen of the Connecticut, Rhode Island and New Jersey, come to drive out the shark while hoping to touch the premium offered by Mrs Kintner. A Tiger shark is captured, exhibé with crowd, but Matt Hooper entrusts to Martin Brody whom it doubts that it is the good. The digestion of the sharks being slow, Hooper wants to break it to see whether its stomach contains the remainders of the victims well, it what the mayor opposes. Mrs Kintner, who learned meanwhile that Brody was with the current for the shark when his/her son was made kill, arrives and gives a snap in public to the chief of the police force, rising against its irresponsibility.

The evening, Matt Hooper comes to eat in the chief of the local police and discovers on this occasion his wife, Ellen Brody (Lorraine Gary). At the time of the meal, by tasting a wine which it brought, Hooper explains from which its passion for the sharks comes. The two men then go to the laboratory to dissect the shark and have the confirmation that it is not the man-eater whom they seek.

They leave then at sea, in middle of the night, with the research of the shark. They discover the abandoned boat of Ben Gardner (Craig Kingsbury), one of the fishermen amateurs who had launched out to the continuation of the shark. Matt Hooper plunges and discovers in the debris of the boat, the broken up head of the sailor.

The mayor gives his green light to the forwarding of Brody, Hooper and Quint

The next morning, Wednesday, July 3, Hooper and Brody explain to the mayor their discovery of the night before and ask him the procedure to follow. Firm, the mayor refuses to close the beaches, the national festival being the following day and the officially launched season. Hooper is carried explaining to the mayor why the tracked shark is a Grand white shark and that he is a killer relentless. Finally, the elected official gives freehand to Hooper and Brody to get rid of the shark, provided that the beaches remain open.

In the course of the day, hundreds of tourists unload continent in ferry and go on the beach. Martin Brody, accompanied by several men, patrolling at sea or supervising the bathers of the shore, assembles the guard. At a given time, an aileron leaves water, a woman sees it, panic and stroke of all its forces towards sand. It is gradually followed by the whole of the frightened bathers, who ravel in front of Martin Brody and the mayor stupefied. Finally, it is only about one false alarm, of the kids having manufactured a forgery Aileron to make fear with the tourists. But with the other end of the beach, a woman shouts with the shark. A man is on a boat, near to three children on another boat. Everyone precipitates towards the scene, but too late. The man was made devour by the large white, which one sees for the first time of film. Its leg, in blood, shredded, falls at the bottom from water.

Brody then requires of the mayor to sign the contract authorizing Quint to drive out the shark in the exchange of 10.000 dollars, which it ends up accepting, not without evil.

Beginning of the tracking at sea

Brody and Hooper are found at Quint, where the walls of its house, located close to the port, are covered with jaws of shark. Quint, old old seaman obnubilated by hunting for the shark, does not accept the presence of the two men on his boat, the Orca , that with much of evil. The three men prepare the boat to leave at sea, Hooper carrying a cage anti-shark, Xe which makes well laugh Quint which does not see the interest of it, sure that its methods are the best. Hooper also embarks bottles of compressed air. Martin says goodbye to his wife.

Once at sea, Martin Brody throws to the water of dead fish bathing in their blood to attract the large white, which ends up biting with the hook. Quint holds fishing cane but it cannot granc thing all alone. It is thus made help by Hooper and Brody, but the cord of piano yields and the shark flees.

Some time after, Brody automatically launches soft foods to the sea, until an enormous white shark left water, missing devouring it. It moves back while declaring “It would be necessary a larger boat for us! ”, so much the shark which it has just seen is enormous. The shark returns to the load, skirting the boat with the sight of the three men. Whereas Hooper estimates that it makes 6 meters, Quint corrects it by affirming that it makes in the 7 meters and 3 tons.

It is then decided to harpoon it by attaching to the other end a floating barrel. This would make it possible to slow down the shark and to oblige it to remain on the surface. The idea is carried out, but with surprised of the three men, the can ends up being inserted in water, drawn in the depths by the impressive force from the shark.

Quint and Hooper are revealed

The night fall on the sailing boat on a calm and infinite sea. The Orca is lost in the middle of null leaves, nobody not being able to assist from Hooper, Brody and Quint. On board, Quint and Hooper compare their respective scars, the gravity of the wound increasing each time: Quint initially shows in Hooper a callus on its head, of with a blow of bottle during the Saint Patrick with Boston, then is with the turn of Hooper to show a bite of Murène, Quint answers him by its right-hand man damaged during a meeting of arm wrestling with Chinese, Hooper couples with a bite of shark during a taking away, then Quint speaks about a blow of tail of a fox of the seas. Hooper opens its shirt, shows its chest and known as to have worst wounds. The others do not see anything. Hooper announces whereas Mary Ellen Moffit broke the heart to him. All explode of laughing. The atmosphere slackens. Brody then requires of Quint what the unobtrusive Tatouage represents that it has on the arm. Hooper, always jovial said that it was to be written there “mom”. Hooper and Brody laugh, but not Quint which darkens and explains why this tattooing dates from the time when it was on the US Indianapolis . The laughter stops Nets. Silence. Quint begins a long monolog at this time.

He even explains that he was on the battleship US Indianapolis , that one which transported Little Boy , the atomic bomb which was used with the bombardment as Hiroshima, on the air base of the island of Tinian. The ship which counted 1.100 men was torpedoed by twice by a Japanese submarine and ran in 12 minutes. The mission was so secret that to the beginning, no alarm was given. The 900 surviving shipwrecked men then will remain 5 days in water, much being made devour by a multitude of sharks. They will be finally located by the US Navy, but only 316 men were fished out alive.

After this tended environment, Quint breaks silence by entonnant a traditional song, which it will take again several times in film:

Farewell and good-bye to you to fair Spanish ladies. Farewell and good-bye to you ladies off Spain.
Hooper, soon followed of Brody, continuous by parodying the words:
Show me the way to go home. I' m tired and I want to go to bed. I had has little drink butt year hour ago and it' S gone right to my head. Wherever I may roam, by Land gold sea gold foam. You edge always hear me singin' this song, show me the way to go home, bome bome bome.
Then the hull of the boat cracks and starts to yield. The shark returned to the load. The men go up on the bridge and draw on him, without success.

The final confrontation

In the morning, they continue to repair the damage caused by the shark during the night whereas reappears the floating barrel. At the time when it lean to leave it the sea, the shark spouts out of water. Brody tries to join the coastguards, but Quint emerges a Batte of baseball to the hand and destroyed the radio.

The large white remakes then surface. Installed on the Prow of the boat, Quint draws with the Harpon, hanging several floating cans with the back of the marine monster. The barrels are recovered by Brody and Hooper, which attach the cords which connect them to the shark with the boat But the shark succeeds in tractor drawing the boat, threatening to make it capsize. Quint is solved to take a Machette to cut the cords, thus letting the shark flee.

Whereas it should be slowed down by the three barrels which it tractor draws, the shark takes in hunting the Orca and its passengers who decided to join the coast. Quint, obstinate, acting against the opinion of Hooper which is irritated, pushes the machines to the maximum. Enough quickly, they starts to spit of large volutes of black smoke. On the boat which starts to sink, leaning dangerously backwards, Quint asks what Hooper could do with its cage anti-shark. Hooper answers him capacity to inject with the shark of nitrate of Strychnine. Helped by Brody and Quint, Hooper prepares and goes down in water, protected by its cage. Unfortunately once at sea, the shark the attack, draws aside the bars of the cage and tries to swallow it. Hooper struggles and ends up hiding behind rocks, all at the bottom of water. When Quint and Brody reassemble the cage, it finds it battered and vacuum, imagining dead Hooper. The large white returns to the attack while leaping out of water and while being of all its weight to the back of the boat. The boat being already well inclined, Quint slips quickly towards the open large mouth of the squale, which devours it in a pool of blood. Brody is thus found only vis-a-vis the shark, in a boat which should not be long in running.

Brody nevertheless manages to slip a bottle of diving into the open mouth of the shark which succeeded has to penetrate in the cabin. Armed with a rifle, it takes refuge on the Mât, soon only place located above the floods. After several unfruitful tests, it manages to draw on the bottle from diving, thus exploding the shark. The animal which empties itself of all its blood is carried towards deep seas.

A little later Hooper remakes surface. With Brody, it joined the coast on a two floating barrel and emergency raft made of a board at the ends.

Appearances of the shark

Whereas the spectator includes/understands quickly who is the “killer” of film, it is necessary to wait nearly one hour to start to see the silhouette of the shark slipping under water, at the time of its 6th attack, causing the death of its 5th victim.

Thereafter, it will be increasingly present, but always appearing with parsimony, showing in the majority of the scenes only part of its body: generally aileron or silhouette swimming under water. Even towards the end of film, it much more often is suggested by the floating yellow barrels on water, that shown.
