History of the Jews in Iran

The Jewish community in Iran is among oldest of the world; its members go down from the Juifs which remained in the area after the Exil in Babylon, when the sovereigns Achéménides of the first Persian empire allowed the Jews to turn over to Jerusalem.

One estimates at 50.000 the number of Jews present today in Iran, whereas they were 85.000 in 1978. During centuries, the Jews of Iran became physically, culturally and linguistically indifférenciables not-Jewish populations. The very large majority of the Jews in Iran have the Persan for native tongue and a very small minority speaks the Kurdish . The Jews are mainly installed in the urban areas. In the years 1970, they were concentrated with Teheran, with smaller communities with Shiraz, Isfahan, Hamedan and Kashan and elsewhere.

Until the 20th century, the Jews were confined in their own districts. In general, they were a poor minority, their occupations were restricted with wear, and work with the noble metals. Since the years 1920, the Jews had greater social mobility appropriatenesses and economic.
