History of the Hauts-de-Seine

The history of the Hauts-de-Seine is that of a young department on the administrative level since it was born only in 1968 pursuant to the law of the bearing July 10th, 1964 reorganization from the Paris region. However, the history of the territory of the current department is that of a ground very in the past populated, rich in monuments of various times.

Before the birth of the department

If the department of the Hauts-de-Seine is very recent, the territory was at all times occupied by the man, in particular at the time Gallo-Roman.

Until after war, the territory developed in a expontentielle way as well economically as in term of population, but without real plan of installation.

The creation of the department

The department of the Hauts-de-Seine today was created by the law of July 10th, 1964 " carrying reorganization of the area parisienne" , which decides to divide the old departments of the the Seine and the Seine-et-Oise.

Until 1964, the Paris region was subdivided in 3 departments, created by the law of March 4th, 1790:

  • the department of Paris, renamed in 1795 " department of the Seine " (480 km ²),
  • the department of the Seine-et-Oise (5 600 km ²),
  • the department of the Seine-et-Marne (5 915 km ²).
