History of the Guadeloupe
This article reports the Histoire of the Guadeloupe . The Guadeloupe is at the same time a area of overseas and a Overseas department (number 971 ) French. This small Archipel of the the Antilles (Caribbean Sea) is to approximately 600 km in the north of the coasts of the South America, to 600 km in the east of the Dominican Republic and to 950 km in the south-east of the the United States.

The discovery of the islands of the Caraïbe by Christophe Colomb was followed by the draft négrière. This triangular trade marks and will continue to mark the spirits deeply. This economic activity which benefitted the Métropoles, generated military constructions and work of fortification of the island, carried out with a hand of Master by Louis XIV, Vauban and relayed by the English.Il acts consequently, to set up a very hierarchical and very organized company drawing these principles from operation of at the same time military orders and religieux.
With regard to the black slaves, it is last having different origins, there be difficulty of adaptation of share of the problems of languages and habits ancestral which led to the creation of the creole language and of the culture of the same name.
The current Guadeloupe
With 30% unemployed, if it is not any more, the Guadeloupe sees its social strains worsening.- on February 1st 1999: Lucette Michaux-Chevry, president of the district council of the Guadeloupe, Alfred Marie-Jeanne, president of the district council of the Martinique and Antoine Karam, president of the district council of the Guyana, sign with Low-Ground, chief town of the department of the Guadeloupe, the " declaration of Low-Terre". They will propose to the president of the Republic and with the government, an even constitutional legislative modification, aiming at creating a new statute of area of overseas autonomous equipped with a tax and social mode special for the Guadeloupe, the Guyana and the Martinique, within the framework of the French Republic and the European Union (article 299-2 of the Traité of Amsterdam).
- the January 18th 2000: The regional advisers brought together in plenary session approve the " declaration of Low-Terre" (27 votes for and 10 votes against) and decide by a deliberation to link their efforts in order to build a development project economic, social and cultural implying the taking into account of the specific identities to each area and based on the obviousness which “dignity proceeds of work and not of the assistantship”.
- the May 10th 2001: the government adopted the text meaning the recognition of the draft and slavery as a Crime against humanity.
- the December 7th 2003: 72,98% of the voters inhabitants of Guadeloupe said not to the institutional reform subjected by Référendum.
- the May 23rd 2004: Victorin Lurel is elected president of the area of Guadeloupe.
- 2005 : Referendum on the European Constitution: the Guadeloupe answers “yes” with 58,6% (weak participation of 30%).
