History of Valar and Maiar
History of the Valar
In the beginning, Valar were largest of Ainur, those which were pilot Vision of Ilúvatar and were descended on Eä to achieve the Vision and to create the World of Arda. Largest among them are called Aratar and are eight: Manwë, Varda, Aulë, Yavanna, Ulmo, Oromë, Mandos, Nienna. At the origins of creation, the four more powerful Ainur, Manwë, Ulmo and Aulë were descended to prepare the arrival of the Children of Ilúvatar but the only ambition of Melkor was to dominate Arda. Melkor and Manwë entered then in conflict. To help this last, Manwë invited other Ainur to help it in its fight. Among them other Valar and Maiar appeared. Vis-a-vis the coalition, Melkor due to leave Arda and to hide in the depths of Eä.During this time, Manwë and other Valar started to achieve their mission according to their Vision. It thus prepared the World with the arrival of the Children of Ilúvatar. That caused the jealousy of Melkor which again declared the war to take possession of Arda. The combat of the Great powers for the future of the Earth caused great upheaval. It is during this period that rose in the sky the Misty Mounts. Although the world of Arda was deteriorated by Melkor, Vatar worked with attention and force the Earth like a garden of pleasures.
Following the example Elves, Valar are related to the Monde destiny of the beginning to its end. They cannot turn over any more in the timeless world of Ilúvatar. Valar are spirits. Even if they are often taken the physical aspect of the Children of Ilúvatar, They do not have preset appearance. They changed in the appearance of their choice and could travel invisible through the grounds of Arda.

History of the Maiar
The existence of Maiar though later than Valar, also goes up before the Creation of the World. Much more but less powerful, they were the subordinates of Valar and they helped them to achieve their task. Each Maia was with the service of particular Vala.

The enigma Tom Bombadil
One often wondered whether Tom Bombadil could be counted like Maiar, but there remains one of the characters of most mysterious. Many assumptions are done about it. J.R.R. Tolkien regards it as an anomaly and does not classify it among Maia because according to its dires: “He is certainly not God, as some said. It is completely foreign with my way of writing. As for the nature of the character, it is a mystery, intentionally. A good story, I believe, must always leave certain things without explanations - and I perhaps was too far sometimes in the quantity from furnished informations (certain readers butted themselves with the Council of Elrond, for example). But it is not Maia; in this case it would not have been mysterious.”
