History of Seyssel

Seyssel by its situation at the border of two States, had has to undergo many fluctuations and frequent regime changes, passing sometimes to the France, sometimes to the Savoy, seeing these two sometimes joined together halves, sometimes separated, according to the vicissitudes of the war and the combinations of the policy.

During nearly eighteen centuries, there was one Seyssel, today it forms two distinct cities: Seyssel (Ain) and Seyssel (Haute-Savoie).

Geography

The small town of Seyssel, located on two banks of the the Rhone, with the characteristic to form two communes, one on each bank, and bearing the same name.

History

The development of Seyssel is mainly dependant on the the Rhone. Antiquity at the 19th century, the river is gone up until Seyssel or one unloads and embarks the goods in direction or coming from Geneva, Lyon or Marseilles.
  • Origine
    Ce place was inhabited as of highest antiquity. The headland on which the part of Savoy east sitting, flanked in the north and the south of drowned plains, made a naturally strengthened position of it and easily justifiable.

    Vers 3500 av. J. - C., the first farmers are established in the area. They leave behind them their tools, like the dagger in Silex of the station of Vens.

The castle was throughout all Middle Ages the seat of the administration of the city and the châtellenie indicated under the name of the Bastie de Seyssel . It was ruined in one of the many invasions of Savoy by the kings of France. In 1628, it was nothing any more but a hovel , than Louis XIII gave to the Capucins to establish a couvent.
    C' there is also at this period that Seyssel, Right Bank like left bank, were surrounded by walls and establish militia and guetteurs to take care of safety communale.
    Dans the current of the 11th century is established in Seyssel a Prieuré Bénédictin rested by the monks of the Abbaye of Saint-Chief.
    En 1286, the count of Savoy Amédée V grants the city its first charter of affranchissement.
    Les Augustins was established in Seyssel in 1327, on Right Bank and built a church of ogival style which remained until 1834. Augustins were dispersed with the French revolution.

  • Time moderne
    Le January 17th 1601 is signed the treaty of Lyon which makes of Seyssel a French head of bridge on the the Rhone. This situation will perdurera jusq' with the treaty of Turin of March 24th 1760, by which France yields Seyssel to Savoy. The border from now on is fixed in the middle of the river.
