History of Nievre

Prehistory

Little information relates to this period in Nievre. One finds nevertheless the traces archaeological of occupation to Breugnon close to Clamecy as well as arrowheads magdaléniennes to Sauvigny-the-Wood.

Antiquity

  • At the time Gallic, three tribes divides the current territory of Nievre: the Bituriges, the Let us be and the Éduens whose capital Bibracte is located in Saône-et-Loire. Many traces of Gallo-Roman occupation are observed in the department: vicus with Champallement, theater with Arleuf, etc In 52 before J.C, Nervinum , quoted éduenne, and current town of Nevers, is at the origin of the revolt of Gaules against César. The Middle Ages

At the 6th century, the évêché of Nevers is created then the Comté of Nevers at the 9th century. It is the successive property of the big families Courtenay, Chatillon, Flanders and Burgundy.

Modern time

In 1505, the county appartients with the Family of Clèves which it sets up in duchy in 1538 before selling it with the Gonzague S in 1565. In 1659, Charles II of Gonzague sells the territory of Nievre to the cardinal Mazarin whom it yielded to his nephew. The Mancini kept the Resident of Nevers until the French revolution.
