Prehistory

Many tribes algonquin be live the area before the arrival of the Européens. The Massachusett then occupy the Baie of Massachusetts. The current border with the Vermont and the New Hampshire, and the Valley of the Merrimack is the territory of the tribe Pennacook. The south of the actual position is populated by the Wampanoag and the end of the Cape Cod by the Nauset; the central part of the valley of the Connecticut by Nipmuc. In 1620, the Pères pilgrims unload Mayflower with the Cape Cod. The November 20th, they adopt an agreement which will be used as a basis for their government, it is the Mayflower Compact. They quickly tie friendly relations with the natives who allow them to survive, the Indians give them, then learn to them has to cultivate corn ( indian corn ) and pumpkin without forgetting the turkey: in 1621 they celebrate their first Thanksgiving. They are followed the following years by Puritain S which found the Colonie of bay of Massachusetts. This one integrates Plymouth in 1961 which it occults as much on the level of the population as of the economy, thanks to the port of Boston. The relations with the Amerindian S are then still good: in 1646 the Long Parliament gives to John Eliot a commission and funds on évangéliser the Wampaonags. It succeeds in converting a great number of it, which is then called Praying Indians . In 1660, the colony counts 20.000 inhabitants.
