Historical dictionary of Switzerland

The purpose of the historical Dictionnaire of Switzerland (DHS) is a project in progress since 1988 and is to present the Histoire of Switzerland in the form of a Encyclopédie.

The DHS is published by the historical Fondation Dictionary of Switzerland (DHS) which is under the auspices of the Swiss Académie of the social sciences and of the Swiss Société of history. The project is financed by the Swiss Confédération. The drafting is composed of approximately 30 collaborators. In all it are more than 2500 authors who work for the project.

It is expected that the DHS will count approximately 40  000 articles published in 13 volumes, giving information on people, families, places and topics. Since 2002 appears each year a volume of the DHS. The precursor of the DHS is the Historical and Biographical Dictionnaire of Switzerland (DHBS) which was published by Victor Attinger and was published in Neuchâtel by the Administration of the Historical and Biographical Dictionary of Switzerland of 1921 - 1934.

The DHS appears in the three Official languages of the Suisse which is the German , the French and the Italian . The title of the German edition is Historisches Lexikon der Schweiz (HLS) and that of the Italian edition Dizionario storico della Svizzera (DSS). The original articles of the authors are translated in the other languages. Since 1998 also appears a version on the World Wide Web, called e-DHS , which contains the complete listing of the word-matter as well as the articles re-examined by the final drafting. In opposition to the printed edition the online version does not contain illustrations.

A reduced edition appears in the fourth national language, the Rhéto-roman and carries the title Lexicon istoric retic (LIR) which is the first specialized dictionary of Rhaeto-Romanic Switzerland. The LIR proposes to present, in the most exhaustive manner which it will be possible, evolution historical and cultural of space rhetic and Grison, i.e. of the current trilingual canton of the Grisons and some areas bordering.

The e-LIR , the electronic version of the Lexicon istoric retic , is a pioneer in the area of the lexicographical technology: it is the first dictionary in the world for which editorial work is carried out directly on Internet.

Just like the DHBS, the DHS and the LIR give, if possible, of the bibliographical references at the end of each article, also in the electronic versions.

The access to the e-DHS and the e-LIR is free.
