Historical Saxony

The Saxony (in German Sachsen ) is a historical area of Germany located in the Ems and the Oder, the basin of the the Danube and the Baltique.

Primitive Saxony

Saxony was the country of the Saxons, which was definitively conquered by the Francs into 804.

Duchies of Saxony

The duchy of Saxony belonged to various houses and changed several times of form and extent. The dukes of Saxony had the dignity of Prince-voter. One generally distinguishes:
  • the first duchy of Saxony (843-1180): Saxony was set up in Duché by Louis Germanic the in 843. Following the trahision of the duke Henri the Lion, the Emperor Frederic Ier Barberousse cut up this duchy in 1180.
  • the second duchy of Saxony (1180-1422): a second duchy, reduced, was then created with the profit of the Maison of Ascanie.
  • the third duchy of Saxony , known as also electoral duchy in opposition to the other Saxon duchies (1422-1806): when the branch ascanienne of Saxony-Wittemberg died out, the duchy was transferred to the Maison from Wettin. Divided between the branches ernestine and albertine of this house, a part (the duchy of Saxony itself) preserved electoral dignity and constituted the origin of the Royaume of Saxony, the other part, with the courses of successive heritages, was divided into multiples Saxon Duchés.

Kingdom then republic of Saxony (1806-1990)

Napoleon i ériga in kingdom the duchy of Saxony within the framework of its alliance with the duke Frederic-Auguste III. In 1815, most of the territory of the kingdom was given to the Prussia to constitute the Prussian Saxony. The kingdom of Saxony thus decreased remained until the fall of the German Empire in 1918. Monarchy crumbled to leave the place to a republic which was integrated into the " third Reich" hitlérien then with the German Democratic republic until the reunification of Germany in 1990.

  • the Circle of Lower Saxony, created in 1500
