Hispano-Suiza

Hispano-Suiza is an international company of origin Spanish ( Sociédad Hispano-Suiza, fabrica of automóviles, systema Birkigt ) famous to have produced remarkable cars combining luxury and sport during the Entre-deux-guerres.

Hispano-Suiza is also famous for its engines of Avion S which in particular equipped SPAD during the First World War but also the majority with the fighter plans until the Second world war.

After integratebeing integrated like division of the Snecma, Hispano-Suiza, in 2007, is an equipment supplier Aéronautique integrated into the group Safran.

History

  • 1904 : foundation of the mark “ Constructora Hispano-Suiza de Automóviles ” in Barcelona by the Spanish artillery captain Emilio of Cuadra and Swiss engineer Marc Birkigt. Specialized in the motor vehicles, Fabrica Hispano-Suiza de Automóviles has evil to sell its production in its country of origin for lack of rather rich customers, in spite of the support of the king Alphonse XIII.

  • 1911: Creation in France of the company Hispano-Suiza intended to assemble and sell in France the models of luxury designed by the Spanish company.
  • 1914: Entry of Hispano-Suiza in the aeronautical field with the study and the manufacture of the famous engine of plane with 8 cylinders out of V manufactured with more than 50.000 specimens.
  • 1919: The radiator cap of the H6B represents a Cigogne in homage to Georges Guynemer whose Escadrille of the Storks celebrates it fought with the orders of SPAD propelled by Hispano-Suiza engines.
  • of 1919 to 1936: This period is the golden age of the luxury cars for Hispano-Suiza and the Great raids on planes been driven by Hispano-Suiza engines.
  • 1938: stop of the automobile production
  • of 1945 to 1970: Hispano-Suiza specializes in the aeronautical turboshaft engines and equipment.
  • 1970: Hispano-Suiza becomes a company of Snecma (today Groupe Safran) and specializes in the design and the manufacture of mechanical drives of power for the civil aeronautics and military. Hispano-Suiza is established with Wood-Doves (Hauts-de-Seine, France) and with Réau-Villaroche (Seine-et-Marne, France). It equips mainly the engines CFM56 (Snecma-GE) and the Trent (Rolls Royce) and is partner of Joint-venture FADEC International with BAE Systems.
