Palio
The famous horse-race goes back to the end of the 16th century. The Concile of Thirty then prohibits the violent demonstrations (huntings for the bulls, collective tournaments, etc) which proceeded, with His, on the central place, Campo. The municipality then chooses to found a horse-race in the streets of the city.In 1605, to improve safety of the inhabitants, the race was moved on Campo. At the same time, the race was run from now on either between individuals (often of rich person aristocrats) but by Contrada , at the same time district and parish of the city.
There exist 17 different contrade . Each race is disputed by 10 horses. The seven contrade excluded take part in the race of the following year. It is supplemented by three contrade drawn with the fate among those having run the previous year. The horses, of the half-bred, are allotted to the contrade by drawing lot. The race consists of three turns of Campo, which hardly takes but a few minutes. Until 1715, the jockeys used the sovatto , a whip with the thin straps provided with lead balls. From now on, they are satisfied with an ox nerve, used mainly to strike the competitor horses and jockeys. The horse which cuts in first the finishing line gains the race, which it carries its jockey or not. The contrada whose horse carries the colors then gains silk the banner attached to a halberd, the palio strictly speaking.
