Hippolyte d\' Este
Hippolyte II of Este , also known as the cardinal of Ferrare , (1509-1572) was a cardinal Italian, resulting from the Maison of Este, and nephew of Hippolyte 1st of Este, him-also cardinal.
Born with Ferrare, he was the son of the duke Alphonse Ier d' Este and of Lucrèce Borgia.
He inherited his homonymous uncle in 1519 of the seat archiépiscopal of Milan, and was created cardinal by Paul III in 1538.
He was then:
- archbishop of Lyon of 1539 to 1551,
- archbishop of Auch of 1551 to 1562
- archbishop of Arles of 1562 to 1566.
It made its beginnings in France in 1536, called by François {{Ier}}, because of its close links with the dynasty of the Valois (his/her brother Hercules, duke of Ferrare, having married the girl of Louis XII, Renee de France).
In 1550, he became governor of Tivoli, where he made build the Villa of Este by Pirro Ligorio.
Large guard of arts, it sponsored Palestrina, ordered with the Primatice frescos for the Abbaye of Chaâlis, of which it had been named Abbé joint mandatory François {{Ier}}, and employed the architect bolonais Sebastiano Serlio in Chaâlis and his palate of Fontainebleau (the hotel of the Grand Ferrare ).
He died in Rome after a short disease, disgusted by the intrigues tied around him, and tired by his political obligations.
