Hippolyte Sebert

Hippolyte Sebert , born with Verberie the January 30th 1839 and dead the January 23rd 1930, is a scientist and general French.

Biography

After studies with Douai, it enters to the Polytechnic school in 1858. It leaves there in 1860 as officer marine artillery and it is sent to Toulon. It then designs measuring devices of deformation for the construction of the guns.

It remains then in New Caledonia of 1866 to 1870 with the head of the marine artillery Management, where it is interested in the mechanical properties of the trees. It indexes new botanical species to which it allots its name in various areas

During the War of 1870, it takes part in the defense of Paris in the II {{E}} Armée. Become assistance-of-camp of the general Frébault, it takes part with him in the battle of Champigny. It is named commander of the Legion of honor in 1888.

It carries out many research concerning the ballistics and the mechanics of the guns and directs the laboratory power station of marine artillery. It is promoted with the rank of brigadier general in 1890.

After its military retirement, he becomes consulting engineer then managing director of the Company of the forging mills and building sites of the Mediterranean. He is elected member of the Academy of Science (section of mechanics) in 1897, succeeding Henri-Heart Résal.

He chairs in 1900 the French Association for the advance of sciences and takes part in the creation of SupOptique. He is also president of the French company of photography of 1901 to 1929, succeeding Louis-Alphonse Davanne, honorary president of 1926 to 1928, succeeding Louis Lumière, president of the French company of cinematography and promoter of the decimal bibliography.

Hippolyte Sebert is also a large defender of the Esperanto, of which it chairs a time the French federation.
