Hippolyte Fizeau

Armand Hippolyte Louis Fizeau , born with Paris the September 23rd 1819 and died in Venteuil the September 18th 1896, is a Physicien French which worked in particular on the Lumière.

In 1848, it discovers the shift of frequency of a Onde when the source and the receiver are moving one compared to the other (Effect Doppler).

In 1849, in collaboration with Foucault, it works on the Interférence S and determines for the first time the terrestrial Speed of light in manner.

In 1850, it measures the Speed of electricity with E. Gounelle. In 1853, it with the idea to add a condensing to the reels used to generate tension electric very high.

It develops a method of measurement of the Speed of the Lumière using a toothed wheel turning at constant speed on which a source of light is reflected. The distance used between the source and the wheel is close to: 8000 m enter the mount Valérien and Montmartre. That gives him a value for speed of light close to: 315000 km/s.

He is elected member of the Academy of Science in 1860 and the Bureau of longitudes in 1878. He is prize winner of the Médaille Rumford in 1866.
