Hippodrome

A hippodrome is a circuit reserved for the Equestrian sport. Steps are laid out with the accesses of the track to accommodate the spectators.

The first hippodromes date from the Antiquité. They were called then circuses and they were dedicated to the races of tanks. Most famous of them is the Circus Maximus, with Rome. The last of the large hippodromes of Antiquity is that of Constantinople, which remained in activity until the catch of the city by Latin the April 12th 1204.

The horse-races perdurent end of the Middle Ages at the beginning of the modern era in France, in Italy and England mainly, but the first modern horse-races are held with Paris the May 15th 1651 in the presence of Louis XIV and of the future Charles II of England. It is necessary however to await the April 20th 1776 to attend the inauguration of the first permanent hippodrome for Paris in the plain of Fine sands (Neuilly). The permanent hippodromes multiply at the 19th century, first of all in France, Italy and England.

France holds, by far, the world records of many hippodromes with more than 250 indexed hippodromes, that is to say half of the whole of the European hippodromes.
